Five to die for Tangail gang rape

A special tribunal on Thursday sentenced five people to death in a case filed over violating a madrasa girl in Bhuapur upazila of Tangail.

The victim was a ninth grader and the case was filed in 2012 over the gang-rape of the girl.

Judge Khaleda Yasmin of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Tangail, passed the verdict on Thursday in presence of two convicts.

The verdict in the case was given as per Section 9(3)/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amended) Act-2003, said AKM Nasimul Aktar, special public prosecutor of the court.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each.

The convicts are: Sanjeet, 28, son of Badan Chandra Moni Rishi, Gopi Chandra Shil, 30, son of Shree Digen Chandra Shil, Sagar Chandra Shil, 33, son of Sushil Chandra Shil, Sujon Moni Rishi, 28, son of Sunil Moni Rishi and Rajon Chandra, 26, son of Monindra Chandra of Golabari village.

Convicts Sanjit and Gopi are behind the bars while the rest are at large. Convicts Sagor, Sujon and Rajon were tried in absentia.

Nasimul Akhter said accused Sagar Chandra Shil of Golabari village in Madhupur upazila got acquainted with the girl in 2012 over mobile phone. 

On January 15 of the same year, the girl was on her way to the madrasa from her home. When she reached the Saldair Bridge in Bhuapur Upazila in the morning, Sagar abducted and took her to Elenga by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. 

Later, he took her to his friend Rajon's house at Charaljani village at Madhupur where they four together pressured her to marry Sagar. As she refused, Sagar raped her there at night. 

On the night of January 16, the convicts took the girl to the bank of the Bangshai river where they gang raped her.

Being informed by locals, the victim’s relatives rescued the girl the next morning.

The victim later filed a case against the convicts at the Bhuapur police station on January 18. Police later arrested Sujan. 

Medical examination also revealed that she was raped.

On January 19, accused Sujon gave a confessional statement and disclosed the involvement of Sagar, Rajon, Sanjit and Gopi Chandra.

Police pressed charges against five people on October 29, 2015.
