Fire breaks out at Gazipur jhut warehouse

A fire broke out at a jhut (garment wastages) warehouse in the Konabari area of Gazipur early Friday.

The fire started at the godown of Yasin Enterprise at around 4:00am.

Five units of the fire service are working on the site to extinguish the blaze.

Confirming the matter, Saiful Islam, in-charge of the Konabari Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, told The Daily Star at 11:00am, "Our units were immediately sent to the spot. Currently, the fire is largely under control, but it may take about two more hours to completely extinguish it."

Fire service sources said the fire spread quickly due to the huge amount of jhut (garment waste) and flammable materials stored in the godown. However, it was initially learnt that the fire did not spread to any nearby homes or factories.

Locals said smoke and flames were suddenly rising from the godown area early in the morning. Later, the fire service was quickly informed.

No casualties have been reported in the incident so far.

Authorities said more details will be available after the fire service completes its investigation into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
