Ex-DIG Mizan gets 14 years in jail for graft

A Dhaka Court on Wednesday sentenced former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman to 14 years jail in a graft case. 

The court found him guilty of accumulating over Tk3.28 crore through illegitimate means and concealing wealth amounting to Tk3.27 crore.

Judge Monjurul Imam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court 6 handed down the verdict. 

Alongside Mizanur Rahman, his wife, Sohelia Anar Ratna, nephew Mahmudul Hasan , also a suspended sub-inspector of police, and his brother Mahbubur Rahman were also sentenced to seven years in prison for aiding Mizanur Rahman in acquiring illegal assets.

Judge Monjurul Imam mentioned in his judgment that the prosecution had successfully proven the charges against all the accused. 

The court also fined Mizanur Rahman Tk 1.5 lakh, and in default of payment, he would have to serve an additional nine months in jail. The time already served by Mizanur Rahman would be deducted from his sentence.

During the reading of the judgment, Mizanur Rahman, Mahmudul Hasan and Mahbubur Rahman were present in court. However, Ratna was tried in absentia. 

Prior to the judgment, the court recorded statements from 27 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant in the case.

On June 24 in 2019, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Integrated District Office in Dhaka against Mizanur Rahman and three others. On January 30 in 2020, the ACC submitted charges against them.

The judge framed charges against Mizanur Rahman and the three others on October 20 in 2020.

On February 23 in 2022, Mizanur Rahman was sentenced to three years in jail for giving Tk40 lakh as a bribe to an ACC official.
