EU to continue trade facilities in Bangladesh even after LDC graduation

Commerce Minister TipuMunshion Sunday said that Bangladesh is grateful to European Union (EU), as it has been providing trade facilities to Bangladesh for a long time.

“I hope that the European Union will continue to provide trade facilities to Bangladesh even after LDC graduation in 2026. The European Union is a major export market for the readymade garments of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is making efforts to get trade benefits from LDC countries in the next 12 years after LDC graduation in the World Trade Organization. We hope that the European Union will co-operate Bangladesh to achieve this aim,” he said. 

In addition, post-LDC graduation requires the cooperation of the European Union to facilitate export trade and increase efficiency in negotiations. Efforts to increase Bangladesh's trade with the European Union will continue.

The Commerce Minister made the remarks while exchanging views with the outgoing EU Ambassador RensjeTeerinkat the office room of his official residence in Dhaka on Sunday.

He further said that after LDC graduation, the cooperation of the European Union is needed to facilitate export trade and increase efficiency in negotiations. Efforts to increase Bangladesh's trade with the European Union will continue.

The outgoing EU Ambassador RensjeTeerink said “Bangladesh is an important trading partner of the European Union. The European Union attaches great importance to Bangladesh in the field of trade. The trade facilities of the European Union given to Bangladesh will continue. Bangladesh has tackled Covid-19 with efficiency.”

Expressing satisfaction over her four years of service in Bangladesh, she said that Bangladesh is an excellent and promising country. 

The European Union will continue to stand by Bangladesh in the days to come.

The Commerce Minister said that Bangladesh is now the second largest exporter of readymade garments in the world. Bangladesh, like other countries in the world, has been affected by the current Covid-19 pandemic. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government of Bangladesh has been implementing extensive activities to overcome this loss.

The senior officials of the ministry including Commerce Secretary TapanKantiGhosh and Additional Secretary (Exports) MdHafizurRahman were present at this time.
