Erosion victims to get land, houses

Around 9,445 families affected by river erosion, will be provided with 2 hundred acres of land along with houses.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Dr Enamur Rahman made the remarks at a briefing in the conference room of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Tuesday. The briefing was organized on the occasion of International Disaster Risk Reduction Day-2021.

Enamur Rahman said, “Although there was no severe flood this year, there was massive river erosion. Around 9,445 families have been affected by river erosion. We have sent this list to the PM. All the victims will get a house as well as 2 hundred acres of land.”

He said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has made necessary preparations to observe Mujib Centenary in Bangladesh with due dignity. This year the theme is ‘Promise of Mujib Year, Strengthen Disaster Preparedness.

The state minister said, “Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country due to its geographical location and adverse effects of climate change. We are taking action with a commitment to strengthen disaster preparedness ahead of the Mujib Year.”

He added that the ministry has been implementing structural and infrastructural programs in a planned manner with the aim of building a sustainable and secure Bangladesh in case of disasters by reducing the loss of life and property in disasters.

The minister further said the Mujib Killa was built under the direction of Bangabandhu to protect people's lives and property from cyclones and floods. In its modern form, construction, renovation, and development activities of 550 Mujib forts are underway in 148 coastal and flood-hit Upazilas. Distressed people in the coasts will be able to take shelter there as well as protect their livestock from the damage caused by cyclones and tidal surges.

Mohammad Enamur Rahman further shared that plans have been made to set up shelters in lightning-prone areas. A lightning arrester will be provided in every house so that people can go to the shelter within 20 to 25 minutes of hearing the warning.
