Ensure level playing field: EC

The Election Commission (EC) has sent a letter to the Home Ministry's Public Safety Department directing the preparation of the level playing field for the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election. EC senior secretary on Tuesday, issued the directive in a letter which was sent to Mostafa Kamal Uddin, senior secretary of the Home Ministry's Public Safety Department

In accordance with the letter, both Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation elections will be held on January 30, 2020. Final date for accepting nomination papers is December 31 and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is January 9. The EC will scrutinise nomination papers on January 2.

A Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer have been appointed to conduct the elections. A number of decisions are needed to be implemented to ensure smooth and peaceful elections. The decisions are: planning for deployment of law and order, protecting communal harmony and protection of minorities, forming an advance budget for deployment of law and order; preparation to make level playing field, to check the illegal intruders and ensuring the overall security of the constituencies.

According to the decision taken by the Election Commission, the senior secretary of the Public Safety Department has been noticed to take necessary action on the above-mentioned issues. According to the EC, the two city corporations have over 54.02 lakh voters, 30.35 lakh in DNCC and 23.67 lakh in DSCC to cast their votes in the elections. The Election Commission has appointed the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner as the appellate authority.

According to the decision taken by the Election Commission, the letter endeavored to draw the attention of the senior secretary of the Public Safety Department for taking necessary steps in the matter.
