Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said the people celebrated this Eid-ul-Fitr without any hassle as the Eid journey of the home-bound people was comfortable.

“We have been able to celebrate a hassle-free Eid this time. Eid journey was relaxing this time. Such hassle-free journey didn’t happen for many years. The Prime Minister is also happy,” he said.

Quader was replying to the journalists while exchanging Eid greetings to officials of his ministry and divisions on the first working day after Eid vacation at his ministry conference room in the capital.

“We had suspicion that there could have problems centering motorcycle movement on the Padma Bridge. There was disappointment among the bikers, but we kept stopped the motorbike movement for several months considering overall situation. But this time motorcycles were allowed to ply on the Padma Bridge and our youths rode motorbikes in a disciplined way which was outstanding,” he said.

He asked all concerned to maintain discipline on streets very strictly to avert any road accidents during the post-Eid period.

It is seen that though the number of road accidents remains lesser before Eid, it increases in the post-Eid period, he said.

“So, discipline should be maintained strictly during this period. I am asking all concerned that you will have to make your best efforts to make the return journey of Eid holidaymakers safe and disciplined. You will have to keep in mind that this return journey doesn’t end with recurrence of sorrowful incidents of previous periods,” he said.

The minister said there was concern about BRT Project in Gazipur but people could reach home smoothly on the route.

“Eid journey of home-goers was comfortable and in the same way, return journey should be comfortable too,” he said.

He said: “People didn’t face traffic congestion this time during Eid journey. We didn’t get any complain from anywhere.”

The AL general secretary said this year is a year of general election. “We have many works ahead. We announced that the works of MRT Line-6 will be completed by this year. Works are progressing in that way,” he said.
