EC rejects 8 mayoral candidacy

The election Commission (EC) rejected candidature of 8 mayoral candidates- 4 from each of Barishal City Corporation (BCC) Khulna City Corporation (KCC) on Thursday, the last day of the verification of the candidature.

Meanwhile, the EC officials announced candidature valid of six candidates for BCC polls and three for KCC polls. 

Returning Officer Humayun Kabir said nomination papers of four independent mayoral candidates for BCC election have been declared invalid after verification, 

Although the nomination papers of four candidates were rejected, candidature of six other mayoral candidates, including the Awami League, Jatiya Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and Zaker Party, have been declared valid, he said.

The independent candidates whose nominations were declared invalid were Lutful Kabir, Syed Ishaq Mohammad Abul Khair, Asaduzzaman and Nesaruddin.

The candidates, who have been announced as the valid candidates are Abul Khair Abdullah of Awami League, Iqbal Hossain Taposh of Jatiya Party, Mufti Syed Mohammad Faizul Karim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Mizanur Rahman Bachchu of Zaker Party and independent candidates Kamrul Ahsan and Ali Hossain.

The candidates submitted their nomination papers for BCC elections by May 16. Nominations were accepted on Thursday. The last date for withdrawing nomination papers is on May 25.

Voting for Barishal city polls will be held on June 12.

Besides, the EC officials declared nomination papers of three mayoral candidates valid while rejected candidature of four others in the election to KCC.

Returning Officer Md Alauddin declared Awami League -backed candidates of Talukdar Abdul Khalek, Islami Andolon- backed candidate Abdul Auwal and Jatiya Party -backed candidate Shafiqul Islam Madhu Prodhan valid.

Those whose nomination papers were cancelled were independent candidate SM Shafiqur Rahman, Al Amin Md Abdullah Chowdhury and Syed Quamrul Islam. Their nomination papers were cancelled due to wrong information provided in the documents attached with the nomination papers.

Besides, Jatiya Party-backed candidate SM Sabbir Hossain’s nomination paper was cancelled as he failed to submit tax return copy and certificate.

On May 16, a total of 195 people including seven mayoral candidates submitted their nomination papers. The last date for withdrawal of the candidature is on May 25. The KCC election is scheduled to be held on June 12.
