The condition of adding medium or heavy weight motor vehicles in the driving license will remain relaxed till June 30 this year.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) disclosed this in a notification on Monday.

Under the relaxed conditions, drivers driving medium vehicles will be able to drive heavy vehicles like buses, trucks and lorries. Drivers driving light vehicles, including private cars, would be able to drive medium weight vehicles.

According to BRTA sources, such vehicles including private cars, microbuses, jeeps, small delivery vans are considered as light wight vehicles. Mini buses, mini trucks are considered as medium weight and buses, trucks, covered vans and lorries are considered as heavy vehicles.

The government has taken this decision in the interest of continuing the normal movement of passenger and freight motor vehicles due to the insufficient number of skilled drivers with heavy and medium quality driving licenses as compared to heavy and middle weigt motor vehicles in the country.

The BRTA notification said that if the license of a person with a valid professional driving license to drive a light motor vehicle expires at least once year, that person can apply to the concerned licensing authority to also drive a middle weight driving license.

Similarly, a person with a valid professional driving license to drive a middle weight motor vehicle can apply for a heavy weight driving license if the license expires at least once a year.

Similarly, a person with a valid professional driving license to drive a light weight motor vehicle can apply for a heavy weight vehicle license if the license expires at least once every three years.

This order regarding relaxation of the conditions mentioned for the addition of medium or heavy motor vehicles in the driving license will remain in force till June 30 this year, the notification said.
