In the month of Language Movement and ahead of the International Mother Language Day drives against signboards and nameplates written in English have been launched in the capital city of Dhaka.

On the first day, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Thursday launched the drives in capital’s Rampura and Gulshan areas.

DNCC executive magistrates Tazwar Akram Sakapi Ibne Sazzad and Abdullah Al Baki were leading the drives.

During the drives, magistrate Tazwar Akram Sakapi Ibne Sazzad told reporters that they launched the drives to ensure that signboards and nameplates shall be written in Bangla. He also said that the drives will be continued.

ASM Mamun, public relations officer of DNCC, said they conducted this kind of drive earlier as per the instruction of the High Court.

He said the High Court made the use of Bangla language compulsory in every signboard, billboard, nameplate and banner except at embassies, foreign agencies years ago.

Local government division at that time had given instruction to the DNCC to follow the order, he said.

DNCC had published public advertisements in this regard many times and also conducted drives, he added.

Officials concerned said that during the drives a huge number of signboards in English language have been removed and a large number of owners of buildings and business houses have also been fined for not following the directives of the HC.
