DMP commissioner pays tribute to victims of Holey Artisan

Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shafiqul Islam along with high officials Thursday paid rich tributes in memory of the victims of the Holey Artisan attack on the 5th anniversary of the tragedy.

   Md Shafiqul Islam laid wreaths at the sculpture "Dipta Shapath" built in memory of slain Assistant Commissioner (AC) Rabiul and Officer-in-Charge (OC) Salauddin.

   Besides, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, President of Bangladesh Police Service Association and Chief of the Special Branch (SB) Md Monirul Islam and General Secretary and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Detective Branch (DB)Md Asaduzzaman also laid wreaths at the sculpture "Dipta Shapath".

   They stood in solemn silence at the memorial and prayed for the salvation of the departed souls of the martyred AC and the OC.

   Replying to a question about the militant activities, the DMP commissioner said that the militants have now become net-based organisation not only in Bangladesh but also all over the world.

   "They are running their campaign through Cyber World. Through this they are also trying to recruit. They are even also giving training using virtual platform," he said.

   Shafiqul Islam said, "However, the CTTC unit of the DMP, along with our various intelligence agencies, has been keeping a close watch on all matters. As a result, we do not think there is a risk of a major attack now."

   On July 1 in 2016, a group of fundamental armed terrorists carried out a horrific attack on innocent people present at the Holey Artisan Restaurant at 79 Road, Gulshan.

   A total of 20 people including foreigners and two police officers were killed in the attacker.

   Additional Commissioner of DMP and Chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Md Asaduzzaman, Additional Commissioners Krishna Pada and AKM Hafiz Akhtar were also present there, among others.
