The Ministry of Textiles and Jute would set up 'The House of Dhakai muslin' to reproduce Bangladesh's golden heritage muslin on a commercial basis.

Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi said this while addressing a meeting in the conference room of the ministry at the Secretariat on Thursday.

The minister said, "A plan has been taken to build 'Dhaka Muslin House' on the land of Jute Fiber Glass Industries at Tarabat in Rupganj upazila near Dhaka. Commercial production will directly and indirectly create employment opportunities for a large number of people, especially women. It is expected that soon Muslin cloth will be added to the list of export products’ basket of Bangladesh".

"Exporting Dhakai Muslin will earn a huge amount of foreign exchange and the image of Bangladesh in the international arena will be bright. Soon one of the brandings of Bangladesh will be ‘Dhakai muslin’. Dhakai muslin of golden tradition, will again rock the world," added the minister.

It is to be noted that through this project implemented by Bangladesh Weaving Board, the golden heritage of Bangladesh lost 170 years ago has been restored. It has been possible to produce high quality muslin by improving the skills of the artisans. The acquisition of Muslin's Geographical Indication (GI) certificate and patent has created the possibility for sustainable development and expansion of the country's traditional weaving industry.

Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Md Abdul Mannan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Mohammad Abul Kalam, Chairman of Bangladesh Weaving Board Md Shah Alam and other senior officials of the Ministry were present.
