Dhaka ratifies ‘Torremolinos’ declaration

Bangladesh has ratified the ‘Torremolinos’ declaration with an aim to ensure the fishing vessel safety and security of the fishermen as well, reports BSS.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury signed the declaration on behalf of the country while he was attending a three-day minister-level conference that began on October 21 at the Mediterranean resort city of Torremolinos in Southern Spain, according to a ministry press release here today.

International Maritime Organization (IMO), an inter- governmental maritime consultative organization under the United Nations, arranged the programme. IMO’s Secretary General Kitack Lim, Bangladesh delegation member Director General of the Department of Shipping Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, Temporary representative of Bangladesh to IMO Dr Shahnewaz and commercial councilor of Bangladesh Embassy in Spain Redwan Ahmed attended the function. More than 500 representatives from 125 countries across the globe and ministers from 70 countries joined the conference.

A total of 50 states, including Bangladesh, signed the Terremolinos declaration which would encourage the UN member countries for enactment of a global law by the year of 2022, to ensure security of the fishing vessels and the fishermen in the light of the fishing vessel treaty signed in 2012 at Cape Town in South Africa.
