Death toll raises

Bangladesh registered 228 more deaths from Covid-19 till 8am Sunday, taking the death toll to 19,274. Daily death count was below 200 for the past four days. 

The country recorded 11,291 new infections in the meantime taking the total number of people infected to 11,64,635, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday. 

The death rate now stands at 1.65 percent in the country, added the release. 

The number of fatalities and newly infected has increased significantly compared to the previous day. The country recorded 195 deaths and 6,780 infections on Saturday.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Sunday said that infections are on the rise and the pressure of patients in hospitals are also mounting. If the upward trend in the infection rate continues, there will be no place in the hospital to keep patients.

Earlier on July 19, 231 people died in the country, which is the highest number of deaths recorded in the span of a single day since March 8, when the first case of coronavirus was detected. On July 7, the death toll crossed 200 for the first time. 201 people died on that day. 

The current positivity rate stands at 30.04 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 15.62 percent. 

Among the 228 deceased, 125 were men, and 103 were women. Of the victims, 214 died in different hospitals across the country and 14 died at home. 

69 of the deceased were from the Dhaka division, 50 from Khulna, 40 from Chattogram, 21 from Rajshahi, 16 from Rangpur, 15 from Mymensingh, 11 from Sylhet and six were from Barisal division.

A total of 37,587 samples were tested across the country till 8am Sunday. 

During this period 10,584 Covid-19 patients have recovered. Up until now, a total of 9,98,923 people have recovered from the virus and the recovery rate stands at 85.77 percent.  

As of Sunday, 4,171,338 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 194,552,936 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.

A nationwide strict lockdown was enforced to prevent the transmission of coronavirus in the first two weeks of July. During this time all types of offices were closed and public transports were suspended. The lockdown was relaxed for eight days on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Restrictions have been enforced again from July 23 which will continue till August 5.
