Deputy Commissioners have been asked to run market monitoring every week to keep the prices of essential commodities under control.

“Curbing prices of commodities have appeared as a challenge for the government. The DCs must run the market monitoring every month. If necessary, they should oversee the market every week so that prices of commodities remain control,” home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters after a meeting with the DCs at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

Ministers of different ministries are holding series of meetings with the field-level administration on the third-day of the four-day DC Conference.

Sources said the DCs portrayed various field-level problems, including drug abuse and law, order situation and inmates in jail.

Highlighting the risk of taking the high-profile prisoners and militants to court by the police van, they urged the government to run virtual

court to avert any untoward incident.

The home minister said the government would think about the proposal whether the trial procedure against such prisoners can be run or not.

Over the sand lifting, the government directed the DCs to remain alert so that none can lift sand indiscriminately.

Asked about the drug abuse, the home boss said that the law enforcement agencies had been working to address the drug abuse.

“We have directed the DCs to resist the abuse of drug socially,” he said.

In a separate meeting, law minister Anisul Huq directed the DCs to extend cooperation in resolving the case backlog.

Over the cases filed by mobile courts during drives, the minister said they had been trying to resolve the matter.

“A case has been pending against the Mobile Court Act. We will take immediate measures to dispose of the matter,” he said.

The law minister said stringent measures under the Special Powers Act of 1974 would be taken if anyone attempts to destabilise the market by hoarding goods.

“The Special Powers Act was enacted in 1974 to address this issue particularly. Measures will be taken against hoarders under the Special Power Act,” he said.

Meanwhile, Posts, Telecommunications and ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak gave four strategic directives to the DCs to fight out rumours on social media and ensure cyber security.

The directives are - creating awareness on digital and artificial intelligence (AI) literacy, ensuring the best use of technology, strict application of existing laws and coordination among police administration, academia, media and private sector.
