Country now has 1.8m tonnes of food stock

Lawmakers on Tuesday said the country has no food crisis since now the country has 18 lakh tonnes of food grains under the government buffer stock amid the ongoing global economic crisis.

Bangladesh has no food crisis as the country has almost 18 lakh tonnes of food buffer stock despite the country is facing global economic meltdown due to the Ukraine-Russia war, they said while taking part in a discussion on the thanksgiving motion of the President's speech at Jatiya Sangsad with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair. 

Taking part in the discussion, the lawmakers highlighted different development activities in various sectors, including communication, socio-economic, education, youth and sports, and information and communication technology (ICT) under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The President in his 168-page speech on January 5 last, on the first day of the maiden session in 2023 of the 11th parliament, focused on the country's massive successes in different sectors. 

 "Although the Ukraine-Russia has slowed down our ongoing progress ...but the country's food security remains well protected as the country has 18 lakh tonnes of buffer food stock", said the treasury bench lawmaker Ramesh Chandra Sen of Thakurgaon-1.

Even the government has brought dramatic success in the agriculture sector by disbursing Taka 15.197 crore as subsidy and Taka 29,000 crore farm credit among the farmers, said the lawmaker.

In addition to this, the country has no food crisis at all due to the country-wide bumper Aman production, the lawmaker added. 

Participating in the discussion, Shafiqul Islam Shimul, MP of Natore-2 said the government is now distributing monthly 30 kg rice to some 50.10 lakh poor people, adding "The government has rehabilitated as much as 35 lakh homeless people through Asrayan project between the period from 1997 to 2001 and 2009 to 2022."

"We hope that Bangladesh will be a smart one and a prosperous country within the stipulated timeframe of 2041 under the leadership of incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina", said Housing and Public Works Minister Sharif Ahmed.

Praising the development of the present government, Jatiya Party lawmaker Ahsan Adilur Rahman of Nilphamari-4 said the government is implementing various mega projects for further development of the country, but at the same time the government should adopt strict measures to eliminate widespread corruption, he added.

Sharply criticizing the role of BNP-Jamaat, Mir Mushtaque Ahmed Robi of Satkhira-2 said the government should take punitive action against those who are trying to create anarchy in the country in the name of demanding caretaker government provision during polls.

Earlier, the chief whip Nur-E Alam Chowdhury came up with a proposal for holding a discussion on the thanksgiving motion of the President's speech in the House and then it was seconded by treasury bench lawmaker Shamsul Huq Tuku.

Treasury bench lawmakers including Kazi Keramat Ali of Rajbari-1, Mohammed Ikbal Hossain of Gazipur-3, Nesar Ahmed of Maulvibazar-3, Dipankar Talukdar of Rangamati, Tamanna Nusrat Bubly of women's seat-24, Shamima Akter Khanam of women seat-21 and Md Shafiul Islam of Dhaka-10, attended the discussion.

The lawmakers also thanked the President for giving a timely speech highlighting the success stories of the government and guiding the nation towards peace, progress and prosperity.

Earlier, they paid a rich tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his contribution to establishing an independent Bangladesh.
