City corporation trucks killed seven in nine months

Seven people were killed on road mishaps in last nine months hit by Dhaka city corporation waste pickup trucks, the latest victim being a woman who was hit by a similar truck and left to die on Tuesday night.

The woman was killed after being hit by a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in city's Mughda area on. The victim was 55 years old.

According to Sub-Inspector Md Shamim of Mugda police station, Nazma Begum is wife of Abdur Rahim Munshi of Rajarchar under Shibchar in Madaripur. She used to live in Aftabnagar area in Dhaka with her family.

Munshi said that a DSCC waste-pickup truck hit his wife near the TT Para bus stand at about 10:00pm on Tuesday while she had been waiting for a rickshaw to go to her daughter’s home in Jatrabari area.

He said that the locals rescued her and took her to Mugda hospital where doctors declared her dead.

SI Shamim said that the van was seized and its driver was arrested.

With this, at least seven people have been killed after being hit by such waste-pick-up truck of Dhaka South and North City Corporations since April 2021.

On April 2, Nasreen Akhter, 20, wife of Ashiqur Rahman Shipon and resident of the Sipahibagh area in Khilgaon was killed being hit by a similar waste pickup truck of the Dhaka South City Corporation at Khilgaon Tilpapara area.

Earlier on January 23, Dhaka North City Corporation cleaner Shikha Rani died being hit by a truck carrying waste of the corporation near Mohakhali Flyover.

She was cleaning a road near Jahangir Gate when the truck hit and ran over her at about 2:00am.

On December 23, a man named Swapan Kumar Sarkar, 62, died after a truck carrying waste of Dhaka South City Corporation hit him near Wari area.

On November 24, Nayeem Hasan, a student of Notre Dame College, was killed by a DSCC waste pickup truck in front of Gulistan Hall Market. The death of Notre Dame College student Nayeem sparked huge protests for road safety.

On November 25, another man named Kabir Khan died as he was hit by a Dhaka North City Corporation waste pickup truck at Panthapath.

Before that, a rickshaw puller was killed and two passengers were injured on April 16, 2021, as a truck carrying waste of DSCC hit the rickshaw at Jatrabari. The drivers were arrested after the accident.
