‘City Corp to monitor building construction, RAJUK to okay designs’

RAJUK is responsible for approving all designs of any building in the city corporation area while the Dhaka city corporation will monitor whether these installations are being implemented in the right place.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mohammad Tajul Islam made the comment while responding to a question from reporters after the first inter-ministerial meeting of 2022 to review the activities of city corporations and other ministries on prevention of dengue and mosquito-borne diseases across the country in the conference room of the ministry on Thursday.

The minister said that the matter would have to be brought to the notice of the city corporation after getting approval from RAJUK for construction of the buildings or other infrastructure. 

The City Corporation will take care of whether the site allotted for the construction of the building is a government site and suitable, and whether the design or design approved by RAJUK is being implemented properly or not.

The Minister said, “A 20-storey building constructed with the actual permission of a 14-storey building or any structure having original permission of three thousand square feet later constructed into a six thousand square feet, such issues will be monitored by the City Corporation. There is no alternative to building a planned city.”

Regarding the recent occupation of the canal at Mohammadpur Bosila, Mohammad Tajul Islam said that illegal structures have been set up there by occupying the canal. These would definitely not have 

been built if the city corporation had known, yet they could be held accountable.

Earlier in the meeting, the local government minister said that all citizens along with city corporations and concerned organizations have a role to play in preventing dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases. Instructing the concerned government agencies including railways and civil aviation to work in coordination. It would be easier to solve the problem by working along-side with the city corporations.

He said, “Houses, offices, courts, roads, drains, canals should be kept clean and tidy. I urged all to refrain from dumping garbage everywhere. We are planning to generate electricity from the waste soon. Hopefully there will be no more waste.”

“Mosquito breeding grounds must be destroyed. Everyone is determined to build a mosquito free city. Everyone has to be aware of the fact that mosquitoes do not breed in rooftop  gardens,” he added.

The mayors of Dhaka North and South City Corporation mentioned in the meeting that there is sufficient stock of pesticides for the current year to kill Aedes mosquitoes and other mosquitoes. The mayors outlined their plans working under the direction of the local minister. The minister assured that 10 magistrates would be appointed this year to conduct the campaign.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam, South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation Selina Hayat Ivy, Acting Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Md Asadur Rahman Kiran were present.

Helal Uddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary, Local Government Department Zuena Aziz, Chief Coordinator, SDG, Office of the Prime Minister, Mohammad Shahid Ullah Khandaker, Secretary, Housing and Public Works, Taqsem A Khan, MD of WASA and other officers were present during the event.
