BRUR Correspondent: Students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) have alleged that a deliberate attempt is being made to disrupt and delay the upcoming election of the Begum Rokeya University Central Students’ Union (BRUCSU)—a long-awaited representative body established to ensure students’ rights.
At a press conference held in front of the south gate of the administrative building on Tuesday, the students expressed frustration and concern over the alleged obstruction.
They said that BRUCSU is a long-cherished platform that emerged through years of struggle and student movements, paying tribute to Shaheed Abu Sayeed and many others who sacrificed their lives for student representation.
On October 28, 2025, the university authority officially incorporated BRUCSU into the Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur Act 2009, following the directive of the Honourable Chancellor, which was later published as a government gazette.
According to the students, the university administration had previously promised that the election would be held by October 30 once the gazette was published. However, due to procedural delays, the election schedule was postponed. After the gazette’s publication, students demanded immediate election arrangements.
The Vice-Chancellor reportedly assured them that the election would be held within this year and that an Election Commission would be formed during Wednesday’s syndicate meeting.
“But we are deeply concerned,” the students said, “that a certain vested group is now seeking amendments to the BRUR Student Parliament Act to intentionally delay the democratic process and deny students their right to representation.”
They acknowledged that the law might require minor revisions but stressed that such changes could be made after the parliament is formed. “Reform cannot be used as a pretext to deprive students of their democratic rights,” they stated.
The students demanded the immediate formation of the Election Commission and the announcement of the election schedule without delay, urging that the election be conducted within the next month.
They warned that if their demands are ignored, they will launch a campus-wide movement. “If the administration fails to respond, we will take to the streets to reclaim our rights,” the students declared.
