In a bid to obtain global recognition, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) will work on strengthening its labs and other activities vital for quality control of industrial products.
The move will also see enhancing capacity of the organization in the field and ensure better quality of products in the domestic as well as international markets
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said this while speaking as chief guest at a virtual discussion meeting titled- "Bangabandhu's Thought in Industrial Development: Importance of Measurement in Products and Healthcare," organized by BSTI on the occasion of World Metrology Day on Thursday.
State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder and Industries Ministry Secretary Zakia Sultana were present as special guests.
The minister said, "Environment friendly and quality industrialization is essential to accelerate the trend of economic development to overcome the pandemic situation. As a national standard setting body, this important responsibility rests with the BSTI. In all cases, the BSTI needs to be strengthened to ensure accurate measurements of accurate weights and measuring instruments."
The Industries Minister further said that, “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted to take the country forward on the path of sustainable and balanced economic development by continuing the trend of industrialization at the grassroots level.”
He said, “Under the leadership of his worthy daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the country is developing at an irresistible pace in all fields including industrialization. The political commitment of the present government is to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh by 2041 by continuing this trend of development. To fulfill this promise, the government is implementing a comprehensive plan to improve the living standards of the people.”
The State Minister for Industries said, "The trend of industrial development of the country should be continued by improving the quality of products and services in line with the international standards."
He called upon the consumers, industrialists, traders and BSTI to ensure proper weight and measurement in all spheres of purchase and sale including production of industrial products.
He said the growth rate of the industrial sector in GDP is advancing fast under the guidance and visionary leadership of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Today, the country is moving forward to build a hunger and poverty free, developed and prosperous Bangladesh through industrialization and employment.
The Industries Secretary said the BSTI also has an important responsibility in determining the accuracy of weighing and measuring instruments used in healthcare. If there is any defect in the equipment used in the health examination, it will be an obstacle in diagnosing the disease.
He added that proper treatment will not be possible without proper diagnosis. So it is important to ensure accurate measurements in all cases. Consumers, traders and industrialists alike need to be more aware of accurate measurements to ensure the accuracy of weights and measures. He called for further strengthening of BSTI's activities in this regard.
