Several leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islam were physically assaulted by the leaders of BNP on Saturday in front of Jatiya Press Club.

The incident took place when some Jamaat leaders attempted to have seats in the front of a rally organised by the BNP-led ‘20-Party Alliance’ as part of a ‘token fasting’ programme in protest against ‘Price Hike of Essential Commodities and Corruption’.”

The Jamaat men came under the attacks at around 11:00am in presence of several senior and central leaders of BNP and its allies.

Some leaders of Jamaat alleged that several leaders of Jubodal, the youth wing of BNP, swooped on the Jamaat men when they were trying to manage a seat for Nurul Islam Bulbul, the chief of Dhaka City Unit of Jamaat-e-Islam.

They said many leaders and activists of Jubodal swooped on the Jammat men and severely assaulted them.

After the attack, Jamaat leaders and activists expressed their anger to the BNP leaders.

According to sources, the rally organised by the BNP-led 20-party alliance was scheduled to be held in front of the BNP’s party office at Nayapaltan. But, for an unknown reason, the rally place was shifted to the Jatiya Press Club, which had been banned for the BNP earlier.

The Jatiya Press Club authorities earlier imposed a ban on the BNP holding any rally in Jatiya Press Club area as the party men earlier had created anarchy in and around the area.

On the other hand, traffic movement surrounding the Jatiya Press Club area came to a halt when leaders and activists of BNP and its allies gathered there with processions. Hundreds of vehicles had to remain stuck for hours amid untold sufferings to commuters and passersby.
