BNP armed cadres had allegedly planned to commit mass killing to embarrass the elected government before the international community, ahead of the upcoming International Human Rights Day.
According to intelligence agencies, as part of the party’s conspiracy to create anarchy across the country through violence and mass killing, BNP brought highly trained JCD and Jubo Dal shooters and bomb experts to BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters to carry out destructive activities under the instruction of the fugitive BNP acting chairman Tarique Zia. Tarique gave this instruction during his series of virtual meetings with some BNP leaders and activists.
As per his secret instructions, at least 50 high profile armed cadres and ten bomb making experts, had arrived in BNP central office on Wednesday morning, said a senior law enforcing agency official, who is monitoring the activities of the opposition BNP.
He further said another back-up team consisting of 20 armed cadres and five bomb making experts were sheltered at different flats rented by BNP leaders in December.
Mehbubul Alam Shanto, a former joint secretary of BNP’s student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal ( JCD), known for notorious activities since his student life in Dhaka University, was arrested from BNP office on Wednesday night along with a huge number of bombs.
During the primary interrogation, he disclosed that he had hired five shooters and two bomb making experts from Magura district.
A former leader of JCD’s Dhaka University unit also told this correspondent that Mehbubul Alam Shanto had a close link with some Khulna based left leaning terrorist groups. Some top leaders of Purba Bangla Communist Party were often seen in his room in Dhaka University dormitory. Following his disputes with the armed group, he came under attack by his rival group at Sir Salimullah Hall of Dhaka University during the last BNP-Jamaat regime.
According to police records, Mehbubul Alam Shanto himself is also a shooter. He has also expertise in handling crude bombs.
He can make crude bombs and safely throw these even while sitting on a speedy motor bike, a former JCD leader said.
Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader, who is also road transport and bridges minister, on Thursday alleged that the BNP is instigating conflicts centering the December 10 rally and engaged communal and militant forces to create anarchy.
They were out to carry out arson terrorism on Wednesday, he claimed.
He further said arson terrorism and attacking the police have started. These are happening, as we feared.
