BJMC mills earned Tk 484cr last FY: Minister

Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi on thursday said that the mills under the purview of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) earned Taka 484.48 crore and spent around Tk 3,652.94 crore in the last financial year.

The minister said this responding to a query made by Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-1 constituency Mashiur Rahaman Ranga during question-answer session in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) here.

Of BJMC's 25 jute mills, he said, 24 are closed and one is running on rental basis.

Of the 24 closed mills, two mills are being used to set up 'Textile Palli' and another two mills will be handed over to Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and the process is undergoing, he added.

Responding to another question from Member of Parliament Habib Hasan, he said currently, there are 589 weaving factories and one lakh 16 thousand and 117 units in the country as per the Census 2018.

Apart from the power loom, the loom industry produces about 47 crore 47 lakh and 40 thousand meters of clothe annually, he said, adding that in continuation of that, about 28 percent of the textile demand of the country (excluding power loom) is being fulfilled.

Replying to another question from lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul, a member of the ruling party, the minister said that at present, the number of looms in the country is 90,282.

He also said that 5.3 lakh tonnes of raw jute has been exported in the first eight months of the current financial year.
