Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier, plans to add 10 Airbus aircraft to its fleet.
Biman’s Board of Directors approved the decision in its board meeting held on Wednesday.
The decision was made after considering the growing demand for air travel and the need to expand Biman’s network to new destinations. The board meeting was chaired by Biman Chairman Mustafa Kamal Uddin. They will be purchased from France’s Airbus Company on a G2G basis.
Two Airbuses from the France based company will join the fleet in 2026. The rest will be added gradually, according to the board meeting.
State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md. Mahbub Ali confirming the matter on the same day after a programme, told journalists that as Biman is willing to expand or resume its wing to new destinations, more carriers will be required in the coming days. Hence, Biman is planning to add Airbus to its fleet.
The state minister said, “In the board meeting, a policy decision was taken to purchase 10 new aircraft to strengthen the aircraft fleet and improve the quality of passenger services. Apart from this, the Board of Directors of Biman will send a profile to the Prime Minister’s Office adding various technical issues including procurement method, price, and source of finance. As new aircraft are added to the fleet, new routes will be opened along with closed routes.”
The State Minister further said that Biman’s expansion plans are in line with the government’s vision of making Bangladesh a hub for air travel in the region.
He further added that the addition of new aircraft will enable Biman to provide better services to its passengers and improve its on-time performance.
Biman’s decision to add Airbus aircraft to its fleet is a positive sign for the airline and the country’s aviation industry. With the addition of new aircraft, Biman is expected to increase its market share and expand its network to new destinations, contributing to the growth of Bangladesh’s tourism industry.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been serving the country for more than four decades. It all started back in January 1972 when the airline was established as a government-owned entity to provide air transport services to and from Bangladesh. Since then, Biman has gone through several ups and downs, but it has managed to keep the national flag flying high.
Biman started its journey with a small fleet of DC-3 and Fokker F27 aircraft. However, in the following years, it expanded its fleet with modern aircraft, such as DC-10, Airbus A310, and Boeing 777, to name a few. The airline has been providing scheduled passenger and cargo services to various domestic and international destinations.
