Biman Bangladesh Airlines is going to resume flight operations on the Dhaka-Tokyo route as soon as the pandemic situation comes under control.

Following the Dhaka-Tokyo route, it is also going to operate flights on Dhaka to Chennai and Toronto routes as the authority concerned has almost completed all necessary measures to this regard.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry senior secretary Md Mohibul Haque told Bangladesh Post, "All procedures have been completed to restart flight operations on Dhaka to Tokyo and Chennai routes. As soon as the prolonged situation of coronavirus comes under control we will start operating flights.”

“Now we are appointing a General Sales Agent (GSA) there, and hopefully, this will also be completed soon,” he said while adding, “Besides, we are also at the end of getting final approval from the Canadian Government to operate flights to Toronto.”

According to sources, Biman operated direct flights on Dhaka-Tokyo route. However, the flight operation closed in 2006. At then, two weekly flights were operated on the route.

Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Director (Flight Safety and Regulations) Zia-ul-Kabir told Bangladesh Post, “From our side, we have completed all requirements to facilitate flight operation from our country. Once where we used to operate two weekly flights, now we have the opportunity to operate unlimited flights there”.
On the other hand, about the Toronto flight operation, Kabir said, “Soon we will get the approval to operate three weekly flights to Canada”.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) have signed a revised agreement to their existing bilateral agreement, which includes fifth freedom rights on operating flights between the two countries.
