Bangladesh is closing its land borders with India for 14 days from Monday due to the rise of Covid-19 cases in the neighboring country.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told journalists on Sunday that the decision was taken from an inter-ministerial meeting.

He said all public movement through the border would remain suspended for 14 days. However, the movement of cargo would continue.

Those who have visa issues or other emergencies would be able to travel with the special permission from Bangladesh missions in India.

However, the decision of suspending air connectivity has not been taken yet. India and Bangladesh are operating flights under an air bubble agreement.

Those who will come under the special consideration have to go for 14 days quarantine, according to the inter-ministerial meeting decision.

India has registered a new world record for daily coronavirus infections for the fourth day in a row, placing more strain on its crisis-hit hospitals, according to BBC reports.

It recorded a further 349,691 cases on Sunday, bringing the total to almost 17 million since the pandemic began. Overcrowded hospitals are struggling to secure enough oxygen, leading to patients being turned away.
