Bangladesh on Wednesday recorded the highest-ever spike in new cases of coronavirus in a day with 641 people being tested virus positive.
During the last 24 hours, according to government bulletin, eight more patients died of the disease, and eleven more recovered.
With that, the number of COVID-19 patients stood at 7,103 with 163 deaths and 150 recoveries, additional director general for health Prof Nasima Sultana said while giving the 8am Tuesday to 8am Wednesday update.
Bangladesh first reported the virus on March 8. Till March 23, there were only six cases and one death. From the April, the number rose with the increasing rate of testing.
In the last 24 hours, the additional director general said they had tested 4,968 samples which was the highest in a day so far.
She, however, said nearly 75 percent patients are taking treatment from their homes for mild symptoms and many of them are being cured every day after receiving treatment through hotlines.
Among the eight dead, four are in their 60s, two in their 50s, and two in their 30s.
Of them, six are in Dhaka and two others in outside Dhaka.
Of the total fatalities, 85 deaths were recorded in Dhaka city and 39 reported in Narayanganj district.
Of the total 163 deaths, 137 took place in Dhaka division and rests are other seven divisions, she said.
The government earlier announced that the entire country is at risk of the virus with Dhaka and Narayanganj “hotspots”.
The government allowed private hospitals to test the virus after maintaining standard RT-PCR lab facilities.
