The government will introduce ‘Bangabandhu Education Insurance’ from today (Monday) for the welfare of the students of the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to launch the insurance policy through a video conference.

The decision will also coincide with the ongoing ‘Mujib Borsho’ as well as the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Officials of the Bangladesh Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (BIDRA) said, “The ‘Bangabandhu Education Insurance’ is being introduced with BIDRA’s own fund.

“As per a pilot project, initially 50,000 students aged between 3 and 17 years will be able to avail the insurance policy,” the officials said.

It should be mentioned that March 1 is observed as the ‘National Insurance Day’ every year.

Elaborating on the insurance policy, BIDRA Chairman, Dr M Mosharraf Hossain said, “Parents can avail the ‘Bangabandhu Education Insurance’ policy for their children aged between 3 and 17 years. Each parent will have to deposit only Tk 85 as an annual premium. If any parent dies for any reason after availing the ‘Bangabandhu Education Insurance’ policy, the child will receive Tk 500 every month till his/her age reaches 17 years.”

“Initially 50,000 students will be brought under the insurance policy as part of a pilot project. In this regard, a government primary school, a government secondary school, a government technical institution and a madrasa (Alim level) from each of the 64 districts will be selected for the insurance policy,” said the BIDRA Chairman.

Officials of the BIDRA said that all the educational institutes concerned have already been asked for providing information about their students as per the requirements.

‘Bangabandhu Safety Insurance’ (Bangabandhu Surakkha Bima), the ‘Bangabandhu Health Insurance’ and the ‘Bangabandhu Sportsman Insurance’--are being introduced with the own finance of BIDRA.

BIDRA Chairman also said that on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, BIDRA as well as the government also introduced three separate insurance policies earlier. One of them is ‘Bangabandhu Surakkha Bima’.

“On the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, the 'Bangabandhu Suraksha Bima' has been introduced which involves payment of very low rates of premium. Under this policy, anybody can get Tk 2,00,000 for medical purpose against only Tk 100 annual premium”, said the BIDRA Chairman.

Besides, BIDRA Chairman said that process has been started to launch a health insurance scheme for more than 16 lakh disabled people while 'Bangabandhu Sportsman Insurance' has already been introduced.
