The individual status of the 3.1 crore people, who were included in the National Register of Citizens and the 19.6 lakh were excluded from the final NRC released on August 31, was published online on Saturday. The final NRC was released on August 31 with 19,06,657 of the total 3,30,27,661 applicants excluded and 3,11,22,004 included.
The names of all the 3.30 crore applicants as per draft NRC and supplementary list of inclusions and exclusions (final NRC) have been published, an official said. Sunday’s list also includes the names of those who have been rejected and those whose appeals are pending before Foreigners’ Tribunals. It will also allow individuals to check on statuses of family members, the official said.
The final National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was published on August 31, consisted only of supplementary lists. "Names of all the members of a family irrespective of their involvement in the claims and objections process were also published today,” the official said. A draft version of the NRC, released in July last year, excluded more than 40 lakh people or 12.15 per cent of the state's population.
In the next few months, these 19 lakh people will have to prove their citizenship at Foreigners' Tribunals, which are quasi-judicial bodies that will rule on their fates, across the state. In line with guidelines issued by the centre, individuals excluded from the NRC may approach one of more than 300 such tribunals within 120 days of the date of publication of the final NRC.
The Assam government had earlier declared it will take all possible steps to help genuine Indians prove their citizenship and provide legal assistance to the poor. The Indian Home Ministry as well as Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal have said the exclusion of anyone's name from the final NRC does not mean that the person has become a foreigner as such a decision can only be taken by a Foreigners Tribunal after following the proper legal process.
