Aman production will be higher than the target this year. Agriculture Minister and Awami League presidium member Dr Md Abdur Razzaque made the statement besides commenting that that there will be no famine in the country.
He said, “Reports of Aman's bumper crop are circulating from all over the country. It was concerning that there was only one day of rain in the Bengali month of Shravana and farmers might not be able to plant paddy leading to a decrease in production. However, despite these odds, it can be seen that the target for the year will be exceeded.
The Minister said these things during the exchange of views with journalists after the meeting with the delegation led by Domenico Scalpelli, the country director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), at the secretariat on Thursday afternoon.
“Another issue was that many low-lying areas could not be cultivated because water runs into the beel and sinks. Due to lack of rain this year, many people have planted paddy in lands below the usnual level to get access to water,” he said.
The minister said that various organisations including the United Nations and the World Bank are estimating that there is a possibility of a food crisis in the world. The government is working keeping this in mind.
He added that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very visionary. She asked all to be very aware of this. The Ministry of Agriculture is also working quite seriously on the matter. The World Food Program (WFP) has been supporting the food security since independence.
