The ruling Awami League (AL) is going to finalise its candidates for 300 constituencies in the upcoming national elections today (Saturday) or tomorrow (Sunday).

The party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said that the list of his party’s candidates for 300 seats will be announced by Sunday.

He said this while talking to journalists on contemporary issues at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s political office in Dhanmondi area in the capital on Friday (November 24, 2023).

Obaidul Quader, who is also road transport and bridges minister, said that the nomination of aspirant candidates in four divisions has been finalised. “I will be able to announce the final candidates for 300 seats by Saturday or Sunday. Many fresh faces have been nominated while some dropped out,” he added.

“We do not want to announce any division-wise or district-wise candidatures. We want to announce the final candidates of Awami League in 300 seats together,” he said.

According to him, some of the current MPs have been dropped out from the election race. On the other hand, young people, who have acceptance of the people, are ahead in this race.

Informing the journalists that Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan will carry out politics from now on, Obaidul Quader said that Shakib could get a nomination from any constituency in Bangladesh. The people are now election-oriented, and it is the success of the incumbent government, he said.

About the BNP, he said that the party has now chosen the way to destroy the country’s economy after being failed in politics. However, the election cannot be foiled by their destructive activities, he added.

Replying to another query, he said that it cannot be ruled out that BNP will not come to the polls. “There is still a chance of the BNP joining the polls. If the party may not participate in the polls as a party or as an alliance, many from the BNP are preparing to take part in the election. We have information that many will participate in the election,” he added.

The ruling Awami League has sold a total of 3,362 nomination forms to the party aspirants against the 300 seats. The process for sale of nomination forms and submission of forms were started on November 18 and ended on Tuesday.

The AL Nomination Board will finalise the party’s candidates for 300 seats.
