The central executive committee of ruling Awami League on Monday expelled former general secretary of Gazipur district unit of Awami League, Jahangir Alam, who is also a former (Dismissed) maor of Gazipur City Corporation, from the party for disobeying the party decision yet again.

The Awami League informed its decision to the press on Monday evenig in a press release issued by Barrister Biplab Barua, the office secretary of the Awami League.

The press release reads; Bangladesh Awami League's Central Executive committee parmanently expelled former General Secretary of Gazipur Awami League, Mohammad Jahangir Alam, from Bangladesh Awami League as per the constitution of the party.

The decision will be effective immediately, it reads.

Earlier on Sunday, a meeting of the AL’s secretary level, recommended permanent expulsion of Jahangir for his anti-party activities and violation of party’s discplines.

Jahangir Alam recently defied the party directives and sought to run independently in the Gazipur City Corporation election against the party's candidate, Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan.

The Election Commission later nullified his candidacy due to his being a loan defaulter. However, Jahangir also submitted another mayoral candidacy for his mother and is now campaigning for his mother in the mayoral race opposing Awami League's mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan.

According to the meeting sources, Awami League leaders discussed the upcoming five city corporation elections in the meeting.

In particular, they talked about Gazipur City Corporation. The issue of Gazipur's expelled mayor Jahangir Alam was discussed in the meeting. Party leaders said that once Jahangir Alam was permanently expelled from the party for insulting the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of the liberation war but his expulsion order was later revoked after he apologized.

However, now he again disobeyed the party decision and became a rebel candidate.

Not only him, but also his mother participated in the polls and he is campaigning for his mother after his nomination was cancelled.

Jahangir was also speaking against the party there. For these reasons, Awami League leaders recommended him to be expelled from the party forever.

In September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters of the Liberation War at a program went viral on social media.

In a meeting held on November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Alam from his position in the party over the incident, which was followed by his suspension as GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later over various allegations.

The allegations included illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.
