By-poll to Dhaka-17 seat

AL candidate Arafat wins

Ruling Awami League-nominated candidate Mohammad Ali Arafat has unofficially been elected as the Member of Parliament in the by-election to Dhaka-17 constituency.

The Election Commission (EC) officials announced Arafat as the winner after the completion of the counting of votes in the evening on Monday.

As per the EC officials, winner AL candidate Arafat Ali got a total of 26,816 votes while his nearest candidate Ashraful Alam alias ‘Hero Alam’ got 5,809 votes.

Sikder Anisur Rahman of Jatiya Party secured around 1,303 votes.

Earlier, Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said the voter turnout in Dhaka-17 by-polls war around of 15 percent. 

Total number of voters in the seat is 325,205 and votes were cast under 124 polling centres.

Voting started at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any break.

A total Eight candidates were in the by-poll race. The seat comprising Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and part of Dhaka Cantonment fell vacant after the death of popular actor and freedom fighter Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque on 14 May this year.
