ACC chargesheets BNP leader Abbas, wife

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday submitted a charge sheet against BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas in a case filed over amassing illegal fund worth Tk 20.74 crore.

ACC Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain made the disclosure while addressing at a press briefing at the ACC headquarters in the capital .

ACC Deputy Director Nurul Huda submitted the charge sheet to a Dhaka court against the couple, he said.

On January 7, the ACC filed the case against BNP leader Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas with Shahjanpur Police Station.

In the case details, it was mentioned that Afroza Abbas is a housewife and Mirza Abbas handed over all the money in the name of his wife.

 Afroza Abbas refers to herself as a handicrafts trader in the income tax document, but there is no legitimate source of her own income, the case statement further said.

It is also mentioned in the ACC case that during the verification of Afroza Abbas's wealth statement, it is found that Afroza Abbas acquired the wealth of  Tk 20.74 crore illegally.

Before 1991, Mirza Abbas had no significant income. He earned money by being the mayor of Dhaka City Corporation and later serving as Housing and Public Works Minister.
