Some 21 people were killed and 39 were injured everyday on average in road accidents in Bangladesh from 2015 to 2022, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kallyan Samity.
The organization made the disclosure on Saturday prior to the National Road Safety Day today. They said at least 61,616 people were killed and 1.12 lakh victims were injured in 44,171 road mishaps during the period of eight years.
The report was compiled based on media reports.
Giving more detail statistics, the compiled report revealed that 8,642 people were killed in 6,581 road mishaps in 2015, a total of 6,055 people were killed in 4,312 road mishaps in 2016, some 7,397 people were killed in 4,979 in road mishaps in 2017, while 7,221 people were killed in 5,514 road accidents in 2018.
Around 5,516 road mishaps claimed the lives of 7,855 people in 2019. Some 4,891 incidents claimed the lives of 6,686 people in 2020, while 5,629 accidents claimed the lives of 7,809 people in 2021, and 6,749 accidents left 9,951 dead in 2022, the report said.
