The first day of the three-day long blockade programme enforced by the BNP and Jamaat witnessed deaths of people, attacks on police personnel and arson and damages to scorch of vehicles across the country.

The BNP-Jamaat cadres carried out destructive activities to mount pressure on the present Awami League government to quit and thwart the upcoming 12th parliamentary election.

Traffic movements were comparatively thinner fearing attacks from the BNP-Jammat activists.

The deceased were identified as Billal Mia, 30, son of Kajal Mia, and Refayet Ullah, 20, son of Kausar Mia, both residents of Chausuti Union.

Locals said BNP leaders and activists illegally blocked the road near the bus stand.

Kishoreganj's Superintendent of Police Mohammad Rasel Sheikh claimed that a group of BNP supporters attacked law enforcers, triggering a clash.

At one stage, police tried to leave the spot, but the attackers started throwing brick chunks at them as they took shelter at an abandoned house in the area, the SP said.

Later, finding no other alternative, police opened fire in self-defense, the SP also said.

During the clash, 15 police personnel including the officer-in-charge of Kulirchar Police Station were injured, he said.

BNP-Jamaat cadres blocked railways and roads in Mohakhali and Sadarghat in the capital Dhaka.

A bus was set on fire near the Jatiya Press Club at Segunbagicha area in Dhaka city by BNP and Jamaat activists.

The incident took place when some unidentified gangsters torched the vehicle at around 3:30pm, said Ershad Hossain, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense control room.

Eyewitness said a group of BNP-Jamaat men boarded the vehicle in the guise of passengers and torched the vehicle while they were getting off.

BNP-Jamaat cadres hurled  a cocktail in the capital's Matuail area leaving three policemen injured. The incident took place near KF Supermarket in Matuail on Tuesday morning.

Several BNP men carried out attacks against police leaving three police members injured during a clash in Narayanganj's Araihazar upazila.

Narayanganj senior assistant police super Abir Hossain said the condition of constable Nurul is critical as he was hit on his head. Inspector Humayun Kabir's left hand has been fractured after protesters beat him mercilessly and stabbed on his right hand.

Meanwhile, ASI Motin was also injured after being hit by stick and brick bats. Nurul was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while two others at a private hospital in Rupganj.

BNP backed Jubo Dal activists vandalized two buses in Dhaka's Dhamrai upazila. The incident took place at around 7:00 am near the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Sreerampur area.

Dhamrai Police Station officer-in-charge Harun Or Rashid said a group of around 10 to 12 Jubo Dal activists were throwing brick chunks at the two buses, one of which belongs to a school.

BNP-Jamaat men vandalized three buses and set fire to a motorcycle in Bogra. At least five people have been injured in the incident. Three buses of Shahfateh Ali Paribahan were vandalized in the Matidali and Erulia areas.

BNP activists in the Seota Manra area of Manikganj also attacked police and vandalized several vehicles. They set fire to a bus parked on the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Monday night, a day before the BNP's blockade programme.

Quoting witnesses, police said a bus belonging to 'Onabil Paribahan' has been parked in front of Bhawal Bodore Alam Government College on the highway at about 8:30pm. Suddenly, a gang of 8-10 BNP supporters poured petrol on it and torched the bus.
