As many as 2.79 lakh applications were received across four units for Dhaka University's undergraduate admissions, an unprecedented response that translates to 47 candidates per seat.
An astounding 2,79,002 aspirants have applied to Dhaka University's undergraduate programme for the upcoming 2023–2024 academic year in a show of extraordinary interest.
The competition is fierce, with an average of 47 candidates competing for each of the 5,965 available seats.
The admission exam is expected to be a demanding assessment of the candidates' academic abilities. It is set to begin in the last week of February and end on March 9.
There was a huge surge in applications when the admission test application window opened on December 18 and was open until January 5. In order to guarantee a sincere commitment from prospective students, the application fee was set at 1,050 taka. The last stage of the applicants' preparation begins on February 8 when they can download their admit cards for the admission test.
The Arts, Law, and Social Science units will begin the admission test this year on February 23. The test will be administered in phases. The faculty of commerce will do the same on February 24, science on March 1, and fine arts—which includes tests in drawing and general knowledge—will wrap up the series on March 9.
Unit-wise application statistics were released by the Central Admission Office and Public Relations Department of Dhaka University. A total of 1,12,225 applicants (38 candidates
per seat) are to compete for
2,934 seats in the Arts, Law,
and Social Science Unit. A
staggering 1,22,080 applications were received by the science unit for 1,851 seats, or 66 applications per seat. While the fine arts unit received 7,037 applications (54 candidates per seat) for 130 available seats, the business education unit attracted 37,660 candidates (36 candidates per seat) to compete for 1,050 seats.
The admission tests for all units, with the exception of fine arts, will be conducted in the centers of eight divisional cities, including Dhaka, on their respective dates from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in order to accommodate the large number of applicants.
Dhaka University is changing its admission test system in the academic year 2023-24, admission tests for undergraduate programmes will be conducted through four units. These are the Arts, Law and Social Science Unit, Science Unit, Business Education Unit and Fine Arts Unit. The units, which were formerly known as A, B, C, D, and F, have been reorganized to better reflect the institution's dedication to academic excellence.
The Dhaka University general admissions committee recently revealed modifications to the admission test format. With the exception of the fine arts unit, which will have a written exam worth 40 marks and a multiple-choice exam worth 60 marks, the other units will have a test consisting of 60 marks and 40 marks. Each segment for the other units will last 45 minutes, but the written and multiple-choice tests for the fine arts unit will take 30 and 60 minutes, respectively.
A total of 120 marks will be used for the evaluation; 100 will come from the admission test and 20 will come from the secondary or higher secondary or equivalent exam results.
This comprehensive assessment seeks to determine the aspirants' overall capabilities in addition to their academic proficiency.
