197 arson attacks till Nov 21

Eight attacks a day on average

The Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence said that miscreants carried out more than eight arson attacks every day on average between October 28 and Monday last across the country.

Among the arson attacks, Mirpur area of the capital Dhaka witnessed the highest 19 arson attacks during this period.

Talha Bin Jashim, station officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence's media cell confirmed the news. He said that miscreants carried out a total of 197 arson attacks across the country during this period. At least five people were injured in the attacks. 

Of the total fire incidents, 95 arson attacks were reported in Dhaka city, Talha added. 

Out of 197 arson attacks across the country, 132 attacks were reported in Dhaka division including in Dhaka city, 22 in Chittagong, 24 in Rajshahi, seven each in Barisal and Rangpur, two each in Khulna and Mymensingh divisions, and one in Sylhet division.

A total of 118 buses, 26 trucks, 13 covered vans, eight motorcycles, two private cars, three microbuses, three pickup vans, three CNG-run auto-rickshaws, some carriages of two trains, one human haulier, three Lagunas, one fire service water truck, one police van, five BNP offices, one Awami League office, one police box, one councillor office, two electricity offices, one bus counter, and two shops were burnt during this period.

The highest, 29, arson attacks were carried out on October 28.

While most of the violence occurred in areas under the two Dhaka city corporations, the Fire Service Department says it did not receive any such report in 30 districts.

A total of 1,888 members of 341 firefighting units worked to douse the fire across the country during this period.

On 28 October, both the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami called rallies in the capital which were marred by violence.

Many vehicles were torched and two people died, including a police constable, the fire service statistics said.
