Zila Parishad member, wife sent to jail for ‘embezzling Tk 100cr’

Anwar Hossain Rana, acting president of Awami League’s Nandigram upazila unit and member of Bogura Zila Parishad, and his wife Akila Sarifa Sultana were sent to jail in a case filed by his mother-in-law for embezzling Tk 100 crore.

Bogura Chief Judicial Magistrate Court issued the order rejecting bail plea of Anwar Hossain Rana and his wife on Sunday. Rezaul Karim Montu, lawyer of the plaintiff in the case, confirmed the matter.  

Earlier on October 1, Rana’s mother-in-law Delwara Begum filed a complaint against five people including son-in-law Rana for embezzling Tk 100 crore. The three other accused in the case are Nazrul Islam, Hafizar Rahman and Touhidul Islam. However, the case was recorded in Bogura Sadar police station on October 5. 

Rana and his wife Akila moved in with Delowara Begum in her house in Katnarpara area of Bogura town five years ago as the latter's health deteriorated, read the complaint filed by Delowara, widow of local businessman Sheikh Sharif Uddin.

Rana and his wife supervised the businesses owned by the family. Delowara Begum was the managing director while her five daughters Akila, Mahbuba Sharif Sultana, Nadia Sharif Sultana, Kaniz Fatema, and Touhida 

Sharif Sultana were directors of Sharif Biri Factory, Sharif CNG Limited, Sharif CNG Limited-2, and Delowara-Sheikh Sharif Supermarket Limited.

Delowara Begum alleged that Rana and Akila forced her to sign on cheques, legal papers, fixed deposit receipts and other papers and eventually took away Tk 100 crore. She also alleged that her daughter and son-in-law stole important papers and cheque books from her drawers and threatened to shoot her dead if she told informed anyone about their activities.
