Bangladesh National Awami Party (Bangladesh NAP) has called upon the government to show zero tolerance to implement the stimulus package during the crisis following the coronavirus outbreak.

Chairman of the party Jebel Rahman Ghaani and Secretary General M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan welcomed the stimulus package announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said that implementation of the package requires corruption free leadership, administration and sincerity of the responsible people.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the two leaders said that the people don’t believe that the stimulus package declared by the PM will come to any use to the country and nation without zero tolerance against corruption. So zero tolerance to corruption is a must to implement the stimulus package, they added. They called for strict monitoring measures to implement the incentives.

The NAP leaders stressed on the warning given by the Prime Minister at the end of her speech about not to misuse the opportunity. In order to ensure that the facilities are properly utilized, they should be distributed as such. If it is not ensured the incentive will not come to any use to the piblic rather it might be looted, they said.

Jebel Rahman Ghaani and Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan also said that the news has already appeared in the media that the programme to provide food to the unemployed is not bring implemented properly. The news of the assimilation of local leaders and public representatives is also coming out. People are frustrated that the government announcement is not implemented for the lack of monitoring.

The NAP leaders said that the issue of farmers’ subsidies has been ignored in the stimulus package. They believe it is important to directly provide production costs to the farmers through field officials in order to help them cope with the corona disaster.

They said the problem is that the implementation of any public welfare work in Bangladesh is complicated. This is because there are no clear principles. A clear policy should be adopted at the earliest. On the other hand, there are various types of complications that may arise when using credit facilities.

This is because of the lack of good governance in the banks. The leaders highlighted the above issues and said that implementation of Zero Tolerance policy against corruption is very important in implementing the stimulus package. Otherwise, it might fail.
