Youth shot dead after abduction in Cox’s Bazar

A young man was shot dead by unidentified assailants after being abducted from a fish enclosure in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Sunday.

The body of the victim, 33-year-old Tofayel Ahmed, was found with bullet wounds near a bamboo grove beside Kauliyar Bridge under Kalarmarchhara union. He died on the way to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex after being rescued, police said.

Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Haque confirmed the incident.

Quoting family members, the OC said a group of armed men raided a shrimp enclosure in Atzainya Ghona area of Kalarmarchhara union late Saturday night. They beat up the workers, looted fish and valuables, and abducted Tofayel while leaving the scene.

Despite desperate searches by family members throughout the night, he could not be found.

“Early Sunday morning, locals spotted a man lying injured near the bamboo grove next to Kauliyar Bridge. Family members rushed to the spot after hearing the news and found Tofayel with bullet wounds. He died on the way to the hospital,” OC Manjurul said. Police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest those involved. The body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
