Youth jailed for online gambling

A Cyber Crime Tribunal in Rajshahi on Sunday awarded one with three-years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed against him under the Digital Security Act for running an illegal online sports gambling.  

Judge Md Ziaur Rahman delivered the verdict in the case filed against Shafiqul Islam( 23) son of late Mokbul Hossain of Hazratpur area under Natore Sadar upazila, informed Ismat Ara Chuni, Public Prosecutor of Rajshahi Court.

 The convict was also fined Tk one lakh, in default, to serve an an additional six-month of imprisonment.

PP Ismat Ara  said that law enforcers held Shafiqul and three others from a store in Hazratpur Bazar under Natore Sadar upazila while they were operating a sports of betting business that illegally accept bets and wagers on sporting events such BPL, IPL, and Big Bash League over the Internet and the mobile phones.

The law enforcers also recovered Tk. 46,347 in cash and several blank cheques and ATM/Shopping Card from the possession of the arrestees.

Later, a case was filed with Natore Sadar Police Station against Shafiqul, who used to run a sports shop at Hazratpur Bazar, under the Digital Security Act for his involvement in conducting an illegal Internet sports gambling operation online on 30 July in 2019.

PP Ismat Ara Begum said that the tribunal delivered the verdict in presence of the convict.
