The fire service has recovered the body of a young man from a river, six hours after he went missing while taking a bathe with his friends at Pakshi’s Padma river in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna.

The deceased identified is Shakil Hossain (22). Shakil Hossain is the son of late Sajahan Ali, president of Pakshi Union's 7th ward Juba League, who was killed in a miscreant's attack three years ago in Pakshi’s new Rooppur area. Shakil was a final year student of Diploma in Engineering and worked as a labourer in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project.

Witnesses said Shakil along with seven or eight of his friends went down to bathe in the Padma river near the Rooppur nuclear project area around 1pm on Wednesday. At one point, Shakil went a little deeper into the river and suddenly sank.

At that time, other friends searched for him but could not find Shakil. Upon receiving the news, a unit of Ishwardi EPZ Fire Service and local fishermen launched a rescue operation in the vicinity of the spot. After six hours of searching, the fire service and fishermen rescued Shakil around 6pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Rooppur Project Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Bikash Chakraborty said four people with him were detained for questioning and taken to Ishwardi Police Station for questioning.
