Rupganj Correspondent: A young man named Pritam Das (21) has been arrested by Rupganj police on charges of hurting religious sentiments and defaming Islam. The incident occurred in the Ichapura village of Poshim Bazar area, Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj, on Saturday night.
Pritam, son of Swapan Das from the same village, allegedly made derogatory remarks on Facebook about the Prophet Muhammad and Hazrat Ayesha (RA), according to local sources and police.
The inflammatory comments, posted on 20 September around 11 PM, quickly sparked outrage among locals. Residents apprehended the youth and informed the police. Upon arrival, law enforcement took him into custody to prevent further unrest.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Tarikul Islam stated, "After receiving information, I arrived at the scene with my team. Upon preliminary questioning, Pritam admitted to posting offensive content regarding Islam and its revered figures. Based on initial evidence, he was formally arrested. A case has been filed under laws pertaining to religious sentiment."
Though tensions initially escalated in the area, swift police action helped maintain order. Additional police forces have been deployed to prevent any further disturbances, and the accused has been sent to court following legal procedures.
