Yellow watermelon is being cultivated for the first time in Meherpur. Farmer Zahirul Islam of Ujalpur village under Meherpur Sadar upazila is cultivating this watermelon named Golden Crown. Zahirul Islam surprised everyone by cultivating this watermelon in mulching method.
Zahirul Islam said, “I have been interested in cultivating this watermelon after learning from YouTube. I bought seeds of it from Chuadanga and started farming on 25 katha of land. The cost of this cultivation has 60 thousand of Taka. This variety of watermelon is in high demand as it is very tasty to eat.”
Farmer Zahirul Islam is hopeful that he will earn more than 2 lakh Taka by selling these watermelons. In future, He wants to cultivate Golden Crown and Blackberry varieties of watermelon on more land.
Zahirul Islam sowed seeds in March on the advice of Upazila Agriculture Officers. Golden Crown watermelon is expected to yield in 65 days. Watermelon has already started to ripen. Each watermelon weighs 3-4 kg. This variety of watermelon is yellow or golden in color.
Many people from far of the district are gathering to watermelon land of Zahirul Islam to see this new variety of watermelon. The farmers of the area are also taking advice to cultivate this variety of watermelon which is more profitable at low cost.
