Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested a suspected drug trafficker and seized 150,000 yaba tablets worth Tk7.5 crore during a chase at the Unchiprang border in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

The operation was conducted on Monday night in the Unchiprang border area of Hoaykong Union, said Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of BGB’s Ukhiya 64 Battalion.

The arrested man was identified as Helal Mia, 25, son of Md Soleman of Kanjarpara in Hoaykong Union, Teknaf.

Lt Col Md Zahirul Islam said a BGB team launched the operation after receiving information that a large consignment of drugs was being smuggled from Myanmar through an area known as Jasim’s Gher along the Unchiprang border.

At one stage, BGB members spotted two suspicious men approaching from the Myanmar side and ordered them to stop. Sensing the presence of the BGB personnel, the men tried to flee. The BGB team gave chase and managed to arrest one of them, while the other escaped.

The BGB team later searched the area and recovered two large sacks abandoned by the arrested trafficker. The sacks contained 150,000 yaba tablets, estimated to be worth Tk7.5 crore.

A case against the arrested man under the relevant law is being prepared for filing with Teknaf Police Station, Lt Col Md Zahirul Islam said. #EK
