World Wildlife Day will be celebrated today across the world under the theme "Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet" as a way to highlight the central role of forests, forest species and ecosystems services in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally, and particularly of Indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forested and forest-adjacent areas.

To observe the day a discussion meeting will be held today at Hoimonti auditorium of Ban Bhaban (Forest Department) in Agargaon at 11am in the morning.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin will be present at the event as the chief guest. Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar and Secretary Md. Ziaul Hasan, of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry will attend the program as special guests.

The discussion meeting will be chaired by Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Md Amir Hosain Chowdhury.

Although every year the day is celebrated with much more activities in the country throughout the day; this year due to the pandemic it will be observed to a limited extent.

Secretary-General of the United Nations with the hope of accommodating both human well-being and the long-term conservation of forests said, “So, on this year’s World Wildlife Day, I urge governments, businesses and people everywhere to scale up efforts to conserve forests and forest species, and to support and listen to the voices of forest communities”.

On 20 December 2013, the Sixty-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim 3rd March as World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora.
