A woman died four days after undergoing an operation at New Seba Clinic and Diagnostic Centre in Jibannagar, prompting a mobile court to fine the clinic owner Tk 5,000 and seal the facility on Saturday.
Jibannagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Sumaiya Sultana Anny conducted the operation at the clinic in Jibannagar town at around 11:30am.
The clinic was fined for operating without a licence and failing to comply with health service regulations. The facility was subsequently sealed after everyone was asked to leave.
Sumaiya Sultana Anny said the mobile court operation was launched after receiving news of the woman’s death four days after the operation. The clinic’s licence and compliance with health service standards were examined during the drive.
As the establishment had no licence, it was fined Tk 5,000 under the Private Clinics and Laboratories (Regulation) Ordinance, 1982, she said.
Jibannagar Upazila Health Officer Fahmida Akter Runa, Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Solaiman Sheikh and a team of police assisted in the operation.
The woman’s death occurred four days after she underwent a C-section at New Seba Clinic and Diagnostic Centre. No complaint was received from her relatives over the incident. However, the death sparked discussion in Jibannagar.
After the incident spread on social media, it came to the attention of the UNO, who subsequently ordered the mobile court operation.
Sumaiya Sultana Anny said such drives would continue. #EK
