Winter veg prices drop in Jashore amid supply glut

Prices of winter vegetables is coming down with the arrival of huge seasonal vegetables in all the kitchen markets at eight upazilas of Jashore district.

Traders of vegetables in different upazilas said that prices of vegetables recorded declining trend with the plenty of supply of winter vegetables in the whole sale and retail markets.

They said on the very onset of winter vegetables lucrative price of vegetables has brought smile on the face of farmers in the district.

Huge quantities of winter vegetables are produced in Sadar, Bagherpara, Chaugacha, Jhikargacha and Sharsha upazilas of the district during the current Robi season. 

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, a number of farmers said they are also happy amid bumper vegetables production with expected market price this season.

Market sources said, Brinjal are selling at TK 400 to 500 per mound while Been are selling at TK 800 to 1000 per mound,One hundred cabbages are selling at TK 500 to 700 while One hundred Cauliflower are selling at TK 1000 to 1200. Tomato at Tk 1000 to 1100 per mound, Potato at TK 800 to 900 per mound. One hundred gourd are selling on an average at TK 2000 to 2200 according to size and pumpkin are selling on an average at TK 800 to 1000 per  mound.Tomato at Tk 1600 to 1800 per mounds Potato at TK 1500 to 1800 per mound. Radish are selling at TK 200 to 300 per mound. Lalshakh and Palong shakh are selling at TK 500 to 600 per mound.Carrot are selling at TK 1200 to 1400 per mound.Onion are selling at TK 1000 to 1200 per mound while green chillies are selling at TK 2400 to 3000 per mound.

Jashore district, a vegetables surplus area in south-western region, usually supplies 40 to 50 per cent of its total production to the capital and other districts after meeting the local demands. Deputy Director of Jashore Department of Agriculture Extension Badal Chandra Biswas said, a total of 16,400 hectares of land cultivated of winter vegetables this season in the district.
