Weavers of villages Ershadpur, Foridpur, Gobindopur and Kumary in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district have changed their profession due to failure in competition of modern technology.

Once upon a time that means from 1955 to 1980 about 2000 weave factories were in the villages. Weavers produced lungi, genji, saree, toale, chador at cworking day and night that were sold all over the country. Demand of these product was very much high as quality was maintain.

But now a days there are 20 weaves only in these villages. Frequently these are to run for production for family necessity, not more that.

Abdul Hannan, son of Shukur Ali of village Ershadpur in Alamdanga upazila of the district said, “ He had two sets of weaver up to 1987”. Due to loss he closed his weaving and have been buying lungi, tuale and gamchha from wholesaler cloth store  and selling in different hats, markets, footpaths of Chuadanga and Damurhuda upazilas. He started, his journey with taking capital Tk. 10,000 in 1987. Gamchha, towel, lungi and others were bought from a wholesaler cloth’s store of Alamdanga upazila town paying the amount. After selling these items somehow he maintained his five members’ family. On the other hand, elder daughter Shamima Akhtar Sathi and son Mustafizur Rahman obtained HSC certificate from Alamdanga College to pay tuition fees by him. A lot amount money was expended for marriage ceremony of the elder daughter. Younger daughter Hanifa Khatun is a student of Class Seven of Erashadpur High School.

“He also stated, at present he purchases lungi, gamchha, towel etc from a Cloth Store in Alamdanga at tk. 30,000 for a week in debt”.

The items are being sold in different areas every day, expends the part of profit for family and rest of amount is to pay the trader.

Again Hannan said, “purchasers are less for pandemic of COVID-19. Daily income is only Tk. 200 or 300. For this reason family maintaining is very hard this period”.

The profession changed now weavers have been doing work as laborers, farmers, auto-drivers, small size of business etc.

Hasan Kader Gonu, Mayor of Alamdanga pourasabha and president of upazila Awami League, said the weavers are unable to compete with modern technology so they have changed their profession.
